The Hebrew University has
promoted over the years the study of ancient law, not only in the
premises of its Law School, but also in various departments of the
Humanities Faculty dealing with ancient cultures. Under the leading
scholarship of Professor Reuven Yaron, specialist of Ancient Near
Eastern Law, Roman Law, Talmudic and Biblical Law, a tradition of Near
Eastern and Roman laws research has developed at the Hebrew University,
paving the way for generations of students and researchers in ancient
law. Students can now approach this field from various perspectives, and
contacts with international institutions and universities dealing with
ancient law have been established over the years. The need for
cooperation and exchange of information between specialists belonging to
the various universities of the country has led last year to the
launching of the Israeli Forum for the Research in Legal History of
the Ancient and Pre-Industrial World, an initiative of young scholars
of the Departments of Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations
– Egyptology and of Classics. The forum has already organized in
2007 a workshop “From Sumer to the Genizah – Diplomatics and
Legal Documents in the Ancient World”, with the participation of
international specialists in the field of Ancient Law studies. In 2007,
the Ancient Law Forum Group, a discussion
group on the Internet has been created in order to promote the exchange
of the latest news in the field of ancient law (conferences, workshops
and events, new publications), as well as fruitful discussions on issues
related to premodern law.
The Hebrew University of
Jerusalem is a friend of the Alan Watson Foundation.
